Why do you support CRN’s Women in Channel Campaign?

It is a great platform for pushing the women up and amplifying them which pays towards gender equality. Women's work and accomplishments often remain hidden and go unrecognised and unappreciated. These contributions, however small they may seem, add up. Celebrating and recognising these contributions of all women in this industry, uplifts those who need support.

How did you get into the IT industry? 

From a very young age my parents discussed opportunities and career options with me, they have always encouraged me to be independent and to do what makes me happy. I was always interested in technology and math’s. All my relatives wanted me to choose medicine, but I went for engineering, and I got into the IT industry. My family has been my biggest support system in this journey.

What do you think is the main reason why the Channel IT Industry is mainly male, especially in technical roles and senior positions?

There are various reasons, but education and encouragement from a very young age is quite important. Women with aspirations sometimes also struggle with the support system at home. It requires one’s time, effort, and dedication to skill up their knowledge to get into these roles. Although things are changing, even in today’s world women tend to or are expected to take more household responsibilities. If we don’t have a good support system at home, despite how much we want to thrive we will hold back. The change needs to first begin within us and from our homes.

What is the biggest lesson you have learned in your career?

Don’t be shy in communicating your dedication, you are your best advocate for getting the position you want, so treat your future with respect and give it your all. By channeling this energy in your work environment, you will not only inspire yourself to keep driving toward success but inspire your team to advance the organisation’s goals.

What are your three top tips for women looking to start a career in IT? / What advice would you give to young women aspiring to take on leadership roles?

- Be confident, trust your instinct, take risks, never hold back and more importantly look after yourself
- Play to your strengths not your weaknesses, establish yourself as a brand.
- Establish relationships and networking. Connect with senior leader mentors, role models and create networking opportunities regardless of level.
